Lena Dunham dedicates sexual assault PSA to Stanford rape victim

Lena Dunham and the cast of HBO’s Girls have dedicated their recent sexual assault PSA to the Stanford rape victim.

Dunham tweeted the PSA video last week, writing, “I dedicate this to the brave survivor in the Stanford case who has given so much to change the conversation.”

In the video, Dunham, Zosia Mamet, Allison Williams and Jemima Kirke, encourage viewers to “support, listen, [and] take action” when it comes to believing victims of sexual assault.

The “She Is Someone” PSA depicts the actresses urging viewers to stand in solidarity instead of moving to shame or silence victims of sexual violence.

“We hope to represent the solidarity and support all survivors should be able to find… which may be the first time that four white women can accurately represent anything.”

The PSA arrives in the wake of convicted rapist Brock Turner’s sentencing. Turner is set to serve six months in prison, with a reduced sentence for good behavior. In the days following the news of Turner’s sentencing, letters of support from his friends and family have caused outrage across social media.

Turner’s father called the rape “20 minutes of action” and according to the Daily Mail, his ex-girlfriend penned a letter to sentencing Judge Aaron Persky, painting a picture of Turner as a star athlete and her “dear friend” and expressing “anger at God” for punishing his “undeserving soul.”

The case gained national attention when Turner’s victim, now 23, released the powerful statement that she read aloud at his sentencing trial. Her letter depicted the familiar narrative in which rape victims are frequently disbelieved or silenced; something the “She Is Someone” PSA hopes to change by encouraging viewers to “create a safer, healthier environment for women to come forward.”
