Wondering where I am? Off Flickr for awhile. Keep tabs on me and Martha’s Vine: Book 2 at the Martha’s Vine BLOG.
Happy New Year, Flickr friends!
My little sparrow buddies are my constants now; they have learned to find a home on my back deck, a place where there is usually (but not always) an abundance of food, a place where they are usually safe (but not always because of the blue jay bullies and the neo-Nazi magpies), and a place where they will find me. They don’t eat from my hand (I wish they would), but they abide me.
My sparrows have taught me many things, but there are 3 things I have learned to appreciate the most about them: their strength, their fortitude, and their spirit for life.
They are so little, so fragile, and so perfectly made. That they (the sparrow species) somehow managed to create themselves, evolve themselves into these resilient little super heroes via a process (or rather non-process) called, “chaos,” is truly ridiculous to me. No, I believe only a superhuman power, an entity beyond our imagination, a power greater than the greatest super nova and more invisible than the smallest grain of sand, only the mind of that powerful being could have made these amazing creatures.
I mean, seriously…. Why don’t they take their spindly little legs and their teeny little bodies and fly south like the big birds do? Why don’t they hibernate like a frog or like a brown bear? What animal in its right mind (thinking like an evolutionist now) would CHOOSE to live in sub-zero temps? Choose to sit in 50-mile per hour winds? Choose to go without water for weeks on end? Choose to be the constant target of the bully birds? Choose to be the dietary choice of hunter birds? Choose to be the wimpiest bird in the pecking order? See what I mean? However, I digress…
I love my sparrows with their funny little looks, their infinite nervousness, and their tiny beating hearts. I don’t love the mess they make all over my back deck, but that’s a price I am willing to pay if I am to have their continued presence. Like some of the people in my life… they, too, make a hell of a mess all over my world, and they often misinterpret my intentions and fly off in distrust and fear. And when they do fly away, I watch them go, sustained by the glow of my Pollyanna rainbow of undying faith, that they will return. And some do. And some don’t. And that is hard to bear. But in spite of the pain, I sigh and persevere… I let the crap fall where it may. For not to have their voice, their unique presence in my life, or even just their memory… well, that would be unthinkable.
Thank God I have found friends who can tolerate sparrows, too. I know I make some of you feel like you have become unimportant, or that I am taking you for granted. But it’s just me being a sparrow. I get very focused on my tasks (especially when writing Martha’s Vine), I am great at making a mess of this world, I misinterpret words, actions, and I fly off in distrust and fear. And just when you think I am truly gone (mad or otherwise), there I am again, chattering and making a mess, totally unmindful of what has gone before. *grin*
Thank God for second chances. Thank God for sequels.
Good-by for now…
I will be stepping away from Flickr for a while. I have a commitment to keep to a few thousand readers of Martha’s Vine; I have promised them a sequel, Book Two. And I keep my promises.
I have imposed a 3-thousand word a day quota on myself. Sometimes, I can reach this quota in 3-4 hours, but sometimes it takes 12. Flickr is a huge temptation for me and takes so much of my time if I yield, so I must go cold turkey and stay away entirely.
Martha’s Vine: Book Two is well on the way. Projected publishing date: Summer 2011.
If you would like to keep tabs on my progress, I can be found on Facebook. And here is the Martha’s Vine blog (I’ll be posting to that regularly).
I have counted my Flickr friends and family to be among my most cherished of blessings. Please know that. You will be greatly missed.
Please accept my sincerest best wishes for a new year filled with great things: love, happiness, joy unparalleled, and successes beyond your wildest imaginings.
May the Lord richly bless you and yours,
Sheree (just another sparrow)
PS I just wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t remind you that Martha’s vine is always for sale on Amazon. As a Kindle or PC download edition, too.
PPS Thank you again to all of you who have purchased the Vine, who have given it as a gift, shared it with friends and family, encouraged others to purchase it, and for your amazing support. Thank you… sincerely… from my heart!
