Often we’re told that we should be exercising our brains to keep them healthy. There are many different puzzles and activities you can choose from. Anything which uses your brain differently to your everyday life will be doing it a lot of good. One of my favorite types of puzzles are word searches. I love to sit down with a new puzzle and work my way through the list of interesting words, finding them all hidden in the grid.
For anyone not familiar with the concept, these puzzles presents you with a grid of letters, seemingly all jumbled up, and a list of words. Your challenge is to find all of the words hidden within this grid. These puzzles are often designed as word searches for kids with a short list of simple words, and with those words only appearing in the grid in natural directions (horizontally left to right, and vertically top to bottom). However, the searches can be aimed at any age group, using far more complex lists of words and with the words appearing in any of all 8 possible directions.
The benefit of making your own puzzles is that you get to choose the topic. Are you obsessed with Star Trek? Then make your own word search full of your favorite Star Trek words and hunt them all down! Is your partner a geologist? Why not make him a puzzle full of geological words as a random present? It’s sure to make them smile! Or perhaps your child has recently become obsessed with dinosaurs? You could create a puzzle specially for them filled with words they will recognize, and add in a few they don’t yet know to help encourage them to learn more!
Creating word searches by hand, whilst possible, takes a lot of time. Also, once you’ve hidden all the words yourself, you’ll probably remember where they are when it comes time to find them again. This is where the internet can help! If you search the internet you can find a number of useful resources which let you enter a list of words to create your own, personal game. I particularly like Word Search Party because it will spell check your words as you enter them, which helps catch those typos before you start hunting for the words! You are able to set the difficulty level to something you (or your intended audience) is happy with, and create a wonderful, personalized word search puzzle.
